TK Core Curriculum – California Edition

Unlocking Bright Futures

TK Math Program that fosters curiosity, confidence and foundational skills for lifelong learning.

How do we understand math in TK?

Research shows that early learning experiences shape a child’s future success. Early math skills have been found to be the biggest predictor of a child’s later academic performance.

In early stages, the need for math arises naturally from curiosity, observation, and the desire to interpret the world around us.

Our TK math program blends decades of research in math education with a developmentally appropiate approach. Designed to help our young learners take their first steps into the world of discovery, fueled by hands-on exploration and joyful learning.

Math through play

Engage students in play-based activities intentionally designed to learn math within a structured scope and sequence, building the foundations for deep conceptual understanding.

Spark students’ innate curiosity and inspire a sense of wonder in math through real-life examples and engaging mathematical conversations.

Integrate math across early learning domains, such as socio-emotional learning, to enable developmentally-appropriate, domain-specific instruction in the classroom.

Program Overview

Thinking Math! by Innovamat is a TK research-based math curriculum developed to cultivate deep mathematical thinking in students.

It follows a spiral approach to revisit key concepts with increasing complexity, helping students build strong foundations and problem-solving skills.

By striking the right balance between conceptual understanding and fluency, the program equips students with the tools necessary to apply mathematical thinking across contexts and challenges.

Our lesson plans

We empower children to solve problems, reason, relate, understand, and express ideas in any environment.
Workshops

Mathematics Made Playful

Teachers guide students through engaging, play-based activities that combine experimentation, conversation, and hands-on exploration to build and share mathematical knowledge in a collaborative environment.

Spaces

Mathematizing Elements of Play

Children engage in small-group, hands-on activities within interdisciplinary spaces, exploring math through art, symbolic play, experimentation, and construction, fostering self-learning and discovery.

Classroom Life

Finding Math in Everyday Life

A resource bank that transforms daily moments—like routines, games, and stories—into opportunities to explore and enjoy math.

Embodying California’s Math Framework

Thinking Math! by Innovamat transforms classrooms through rich, connected learning that brings together Big Ideas, Mathematical Practices, and equitable teaching, empowering every student to grow as a confident mathematical thinker.

Designed around Learning Trajectories & Big Ideas

Thinking Math! is built on the Big Ideas framework, shifting math instruction from isolated standards to a connected, coherent approach that deepens students’ mathematical understanding across time.

Designed with the SMPs at its heart

Beyond content alignment, Thinking Math! incorporates the Standards for Mathematical Practice (SMPs), focusing on reasoning, problem-solving, and critical thinking.
—And, of course, aligned with California’s standards (CCSS, Common Core State Standards).

Putting Equitable and Engaging Instruction into Practice

Thinking Math! integrates equity-driven instruction to make learning accessible and engaging for all students.
Rooted in socio-constructivist, the program fosters inclusivity by Teaching Big Ideas, Using Open Tasks, Prioritizing Reasoning , and Encouraging Conjectures.

Empowering Multilingual Learners

Empowers multilingual learners through equitable, language-rich instruction that values their cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
It supports understanding with visual models, hands-on learning, multilingual discourse , and clear, scaffolded language .

In partnership with Dr. Peter Liljedahl

Powered by Building Thinking Classrooms

Endorsed by Dr. Peter Liljedahl, Thinking Math! brings BTC principles to life with rich tasks, deep thinking, and student-centered learning.

Embedded strategies help teachers break traditional patterns and implement meaningful, standards-aligned instruction.

Each Stretch includes Teaching Tips to help teachers apply Building Thinking Classrooms (BTC)strategies.

BTC-style tasks are open-ended, accessible , and designed to spark productive struggle. They invite multiple strategies, promote collaboration, and keep students thinking, talking, and engaged.

Starting in Stretch 4, you can implement 40 non-curricular highly engaging tasks —15 for grades K–2 and 25 for grades 3–5—to deepen student thinking.
