1st and 2nd Grade

Early Intervention (Artist)

Identify your students’ math challenges to enhance their performance

What the intervention program consists of

This program is aimed at 1st and 2nd grade students struggling with math and consists of three phases:

  • Identifying students performing below expectations for their age group
  • Personalized intervention for these students to enhance their performance.
  • Assessment of individual student progress

Phases of the intervention

The initial assessment and final evaluation are conducted through the COSMOS Test, which lasts one hour and is designed to identify students struggling with math.

The intervention offers additional practice sessions, which are specifically designed to enhance the performance of the participants. We recommend doing 4 extra sessions a week to ensure the effectiveness of the tool.

Personalized Intervention

(January to May)

FROM OCTOBER TO DECEMBER

1. Initial Assessment and Report

Through a universal screening test (COSMOS Test), we will get a complete overview of the entire class to identify students whose math performance is below the established benchmark for their age. These students are at higher risk of not learning the basic math skills, and therefore, they are the ones who need to participate in the intervention.

Prepare for the COSMOS Test

It’s essential that you watch the video to prepare the presentation you will need to project to make the test more dynamic.

Set aside one hour and reserve a classroom equipped with a projector for the presentation. If possible, ask a fellow educator to assist you during the test session.

Your students will need to log into Atlas, navigate to the “Tests” section, and enter the access code. You will find it in the Classroom Manager under Assessment and Intervention – Tests and Results.

Initial report

Once the COSMOS test period is complete, you will receive a detailed report of the whole class (download a sample here).

In the initial report you will receive the following information:

  • Comparison of each student’s cognitive results with the universal screening.
  • Recommendation of students for intervention and individual analysis with detailed cognitive indicators.
  • A general overview and comparison of class performance for each task.

2. Personalized Intervention

During this 16-week phase, selected students complete additional sessions in Atlas to improve their mathematical foundations. Here we explain where to see the proposed students and how to adjust the list:

Frequently Asked Questions about Personalized Intervention

What do students do during the Intervention?

We recommend that students complete 4 additional weekly sessions of 15 minutes each to achieve considerable improvement.

However, research shows that favorable results begin to be observed starting from an average of 2.2 sessions per week.

We recommend completing no more than two Intervention sessions per day; the limit is 4 sessions per week.

What are the sessions like, and how can I access them?

Intervention sessions include two activities (number construction and estimation) that gradually increase in complexity.

Students can access them in two ways through the Atlas menu:

1

From “Learning Path”: before each regular session, they will be prompted to complete an Intervention session.

2

Or, from “Artist”: here, they will find only the weekly intervention sessions.

How to organize Intervention in the classroom

As a teacher, you must plan the space and time to ensure the weekly 15-minute sessions (in addition to regular sessions). We suggest different organizational options for Intervention:

  • 15-minute sessions: Look for time slots during the week to complete sessions independently. If you have more time on a given day, you can complete two consecutive sessions (30 minutes).
  • Practice continuity: Take advantage of regular Atlas digital practice days to complete the Intervention session.
  • Hybrid model (school and home): If it is not possible to complete all sessions at school, you can enable practice at home. We recommend, however, that at least half of the sessions be completed in the classroom to ensure proper monitoring. For more information, check here.

Monitoring from the Classroom Manager

The monitoring panel is located in the Assessment and Intervention (Early Intervention) section. It allows you to monitor students throughout the entire Intervention phase and highlights two key aspects:

FROM MAY TO JUNE

3. Final Assessment and Report

In this phase, the entire class retakes the COSMOS Test. For the students in the intervention, we will verify whether their performance has improved after the program. For the rest of the class, we will be able to observe their progress throughout the course.

We will analyze the test results, and you will receive all the information in two reports detailing the students’ progress.
