This time we traveled to Mexico, to the town of Naucalpan to hear the testimony and experience of Colegio Academia Maddox. The school tries to equip students with tools to unleash their full potential. They decided to implement Innovamat’s curriculum to teach math in their classrooms so we wanted to know what their experience was like.

A paradigm shift in learning mathematics

Teachers at Academia Maddox agree that what has surprised them most is the paradigm shift in the way they teach and learn math. María Esther Jiménez, 2nd grade teacher, commented as follows:

“This is a very innovative new curriculum. I think it has come to revolutionize the way students learn.”

A range of strategies and classroom conversation have made students much more active and they use more specific mathematical language.

As Diana Dominguez, a 1st grade teacher, says, “Hearing such small children express themselves using mathematical language has been fascinating.”

Learning in a much friendlier environment

For her part, Angélica Cortés, a 6th grade teacher, highlights the new classroom dynamics created by Innovamat. She comments that her students were previously more used to working with the textbook and mechanizing. But, with Innovamat, a much friendlier learning environment has really been created. Students are more independent and face real problems while learning through much more playful activities. Angelica explained that “they face problems alone, without any need of help or intervention. And little by little, and by playing, they discover a lot more.” However, she also highlights that Innovamat has helped create an environment in which students are not only much more active, but they also support and ask each other: “And how did you do it?”. Angelica points out that they support each other by being able to ask their classmates and those who have succeeded help others get there too, and that a very beautiful learning environment is created.

Lastly, Aksa Eguía, prefect of studies, says that it has not only been a positive change for the students, but also for the teachers. This was confirmed by Diana:

“To me, it is very motivating and rewarding to know that mathematics is no longer the least liked subject”

It seems that Innovamat has therefore helped to make them much more motivated and that this motivation then passed on to their students.
