The Number Line in Elementary School: What It Is and How We Use It
One of the first tools we explore in depth during elementary school is the number line. It plays a key role in learning math, as it helps children develop what we call number sense—that is, understanding numbers in all their dimensions: quantity, order, operations, and more.

This number sense is the foundation on which children build their mathematical knowledge, alongside other concepts and skills they’ll develop over time.

In this article, we’ll take a look at what the number line is and how we use it in the classroom. The number line will accompany students throughout many grades, helping them grasp a wide range of concepts—so let’s explore why it’s so important.

What Is the Number Line?

The number line isn’t an invention of Innovamat. It’s a standard mathematical tool used to represent the set of real numbers in an ordered way, and it’s used throughout math education in many different contexts.

For example, the coordinate axes used in graphs are simply two number lines placed perpendicular to each other.

How the Number Line Is Used

Children in the early years of elementary school often struggle to express their mathematical thinking clearly. That’s why any visual or physical resource that helps them represent numbers can also help them communicate their ideas, making it easier for teachers to understand their reasoning and offer effective guidance.

For this reason, we provide students with a variety of hands-on materials. In this case, bead strings are especially useful and—with a bit of practice—serve as a stepping stone toward working with the number line.

Students need to understand numbers as an ordered set of elements. To support this, we introduce them first to a two-color bead string, which helps them recognize groups of 5. Later, as they become comfortable working with larger numbers, they move on to recognizing groups of 10.

Using bead strings, students begin to understand where numbers are placed and how they relate to one another:

  • 8 is two less than 10 and three more than 5.
  • 12 is made up of two groups of 5 beads and two extra beads.


Through this approach, children begin to perform their first additions and subtractions—initially by counting beads, and later by making jumps along the string.



Families should keep in mind that knowing how to add isn’t just about solving an operation the way many of us remember—writing the numbers vertically and using an algorithm we repeated over and over until we could finally solve something like 13 + 15.

That’s just one way to solve addition problems, but it’s not the only one. Counting is also a valid strategy for finding a sum.

Truly knowing how to add means being able to solve additive situations, regardless of the method used to find the solution. Teachers understand this deeply, and this is where they focus their effort and intention in the classroom.

How to Support the Number Line at Home

At home, you can help your child strengthen key skills that will make them more confidet and fluent when working with the number line. Here are some ideas:
  • Look for opportunities to count together. This helps children internalize numbers and their order. Repeating numbers in sequence helps build a solid foundation. Over time, they’ll become more comfortable counting backward, or by 2s and 5s with speed and accuracy.
  • Emphasize number combinations that make 10 (like 2 + 8, 4 + 6, 1 + 9…). Knowing these combinations well builds fluency and confidence when students begin making jumps on the number line.
  • Play with breaking down the digits of multi-digit numbers. For example, 27 is made up of 2 tens (two groups of 10) and 7 ones. Understanding this structure makes it easier to position numbers on the number line and work with them flexibly.



All of these strategies will help your child place and work with numbers more effectively on the number line—so have fun and play with them!
