🗨️ Short activities that spark math conversations

Dear teachers:

In a couple of weeks, we will enter December ✨, a month that invites us to look calmly and listen. For this reason, I would like to invite you to observe and analyze how children interpret images full of detail and meaning, and how, through conversation, they share their observations and shape mathematical ideas that arise from their curiosity.

We will view two videos of short whole-class activities, each lasting less than five minutes, in which we can identify great mathematical richness through dialogue.

Vídeo 1 – Whose object is it?

We can observe how children define the characteristics of characters and objects, as well as what they focus on to establish relationships. But, beyond description, it is especially interesting to analyze how they justify their decisions.

The teacher begins the activity by introducing the idea of sequences and patterns, starting from the students’ observation that the children are standing in a line. The teacher points out that they follow an AB sequence.

Next, students describe where they think each character might be based on their clothing. For example: “I think this girl could be going to the beach because she’s wearing a swimsuit.”

As they start distributing different items among the characters, students explain their choices by connecting clothing to their hypotheses about the situation or possible actions, using the objects as clues. For instance, they give the ball to the boy wearing cleats.

Some students even offer more than one justification for the same item. In the case of the water bottle, they suggest giving it to the girl headed to the beach because she might get thirsty, but also to the boy playing soccer.

This experience highlights how dialogue and observation can serve as powerful tools for developing mathematical reasoning and communication in the classroom.

Vídeo 2 – Visual Memory & Positions

We see how the teacher builds on students’ observations to connect with mathematical concepts they uncover while analyzing the image. In this classroom, students focused especially on geometric aspects: they identified gifts shaped like cubes, a ball shaped like a sphere, and various 2D shapes, such as circles and quadrilaterals, appearing in different parts of the drawing.

The teacher also uses these observations to link concepts from other areas, such as number, by counting the circles on the vehicles.

This is just a small example of what can emerge from these kinds of conversations. I invite you to reflect: What other concepts could have been explored using this image? Can you identify ways to incorporate vocabulary about relative position in space or number decomposition?
